About Us
A Home That Happens to Provide Care
Most care homes were built to be care homes. Old Raven House was built to be a home – and it has been one, in one form or another, for over five hundred years.
That difference runs through everything we do. We are not a care provider that happens to have a building; we are a home, with history and character and a garden, that happens to provide care. Families tell us they feel it the moment they arrive.
Five hundred years of welcome
Our Story
Old Raven House dates back to the 1500s. Its timber frame and herringbone brickwork have watched Hook grow around them, and in its time the building has served as a coaching inn – a place whose whole purpose was to welcome people in and look after them. It is officially recognised on the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II listed building, first listed in 1952.
That history of welcome still feels fitting. The house looks after people today just as it always has, with the original reception rooms and gardens at the heart of daily life, and a modern wing adding comfort alongside the character.

Personal and unhurried
Our Approach to Care
Care at Old Raven House is personal, patient and unhurried. With 43 rooms, we are small enough for our team to know every resident properly – their history, their routines, their preferences, the things that make them feel at ease. Support is shaped around each person, and independence is encouraged wherever possible.
We are honest about what we are and what we are not. We provide residential care, dementia care, respite, day visits and palliative care. We do not provide nursing care, and we will always say so plainly rather than let a family find out later.
Familiar faces
Our Team
Many of our team have been part of Old Raven House for years – some for decades – and several hold Champion status in their specialised areas of care.
That continuity matters: familiar faces, day after day, are one of the quiet things that make a home feel settled, particularly for residents living with dementia.
